Mentoring Matters – ‘Guiding the next generation towards greatness’
On being first appointed Provincial Grand Mentor in 2023, I introduced the Mentoring Matters program with the aim of transforming the understanding and importance of effective mentoring that would enhance the masonic journey for our brethren throughout Berkshire. In the past year, my team has launched innovative initiatives that foster a deep appreciation for Freemasonry, encourage lifelong learning, and reinvigorate member engagement.
The innovative, Mentoring Matters program, championed by my team and I, is a clarion call to every member. This initiative is designed to forge meaningful connections, cultivate personal and collective growth, and ensure that our time-honoured traditions are continuously revitalised through modern insights. It is a structured framework that welcomes your ideas, your energy, and your commitment to shaping an environment where every member feels supported and inspired.
For those newly initiated into our fraternity, the journey might feel like stepping into a vast, intricate tapestry of symbolism and meaning. With the guidance of experienced mentors, you’ll find not only direction in navigating the traditions and rituals of Freemasonry but also a compassionate hand ready to help you unlock your potential. Your introduction into mentorship is an invitation to further your journey of self-discovery and personal development, a journey that resonates deeply with the essence of our fraternity.
To our established members, your hard-won experience and deep-rooted insight form the bedrock upon which our fraternity stands. The wisdom you impart through mentoring is the spark that can ignite transformation in those who are just beginning their Masonic journey. By sharing your experiences, both triumphs and challenges, you contribute to an evolving dialogue that honours our heritage while pushing the boundaries of what Freemasonry can achieve today.
The Cards by Degree Initiative – ‘Strengthening fraternal bonds one card at a time’
At the forefront of our program is the Cards by Degree initiative. After each candidate completes one of the three Craft degrees and following their exaltation into the Royal Arch, they receive a carefully designed card. These cards are more than souvenirs; they carry detailed explanations of the ceremony which they have just experienced, accessed through a QR code on the reverse of each card, providing insights that enrich the candidate’s understanding and inspire further exploration of Masonic traditions. The personal touch of each card helps sustain the enthusiasm and curiosity needed to thrive on one’s masonic journey. We shall also shortly be introducing two further cards for Lodge and Personal Mentors giving immediate access to useful a relevant information that will assist in performing the duties of this important office.
Workshops and Bimonthly Mentor Gatherings – ‘Building Bonds of Brotherhood’
In our continual pursuit of excellence in mentorship, we recently hosted two dynamic workshops. These sessions brought together mentors and personal mentors to present and discuss our vision for the future of mentoring in the province. The energy and ideas shared during these workshops have paved the way for further improvements, and we look forward to a third workshop later in 2025. Complementing these events, our bimonthly mentor gatherings via Zoom have proven remarkably successful. These virtual meetings offer an engaging platform for candid discussions, sharing best practices, and reinforcing the bonds that hold our mentoring community together.
The Royal Arch Playlet Presentation – ‘Bringing the traditions of the Royal Arch to life’
Creativity and tradition unite in the innovative Royal Arch Playlet presented by our team in Craft Lodges. This engaging playlet not only introduces the mysteries of the Royal Arch but has also played a pivotal role in attracting new candidates, as well as welcome back members who have drifted away. The success of this initiative is underscored by its adoption in several other Provinces nationwide, affirming its powerful impact on broadening participation in our Order.
Care Teams Matter – ‘Enhancing the wellbeing of our members’
As part of my role as Provincial Grand Mentor, I proudly serve on the Provincial Care Team led by W Bro Iain Marnock OBE. Working in line with the Membership Challenge scheme, we have focused on raising awareness among Lodges and Chapters regarding the benefits of embracing the implementation of a robust and effective care team within each of our masonic units. This initiative encourages units to actively engage with their members, ensuring that every Freemason feels valued, connected, and committed to the business of their Lodge or Chapter. The early success of this approach is evident in the thriving communities where effective care teams are already in place, and we remain optimistic that others will soon follow.
Solomon Academy Diploma – ‘A Pathway to Lifelong Learning’
In the spirit of lifelong learning and continuous development, and in conjunction with our Learning and Development Team, we are proud to introduce the Solomon Academy Diploma. This structured pathway is designed to enrich your understanding of our timeless teachings by inviting members to delve into the depths of Masonic ritual and tradition through a series of online quizzes.
The Diploma features four progressive modules:
- Entered Apprentice
- Fellow Craft
- Master Mason
- Royal Arch
Each module is meticulously crafted to test your knowledge of the rituals and symbolism inherent within Freemasonry, giving you the flexibility to study at your own pace. This initiative not only reinforces your comprehension of our teachings but also enhances personal growth and deepens your appreciation for the rich heritage of our Order.
Upon successful completion of all four modules, your achievement is formally celebrated within your Lodge or Chapter. A diploma of recognition, presented by the Provincial Grand Master, will underscore your commitment to continuous development and your dedication to the enduring values of our fraternity.
We encourage all members to embrace this unique opportunity to further enrich your Masonic journey. Embrace the challenge, deepen your knowledge, and continue to build upon the legacy of our great traditions.
