Provincial Grand Chapter – Annual Convocation – 9th June 2022

The Annual Convocation of Berkshire Provincial Grand Chapter took place on the 9th June 2022, a week later than usual having deferred to the Celebrations for HM The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

On this occasion over 200 Companions filled the main Temple, including 59 representatives of 21 neighbouring Provinces, the PGM and his Executive of Berkshire Provincial Grand Lodge, along with representatives of the Orders of Provincial Grand Mark Lodge of Berkshire, The Ancient and Accepted Rite, District of Berkshire, and the Knights Templar Provincial Grand Priory of Oxfordshire, Berkshire and Buckinghamshire.

This much awaited return to normality, following two years of restricted meetings, celebrated the award of Provincial Appointments and Promotions to 71 very worthy Companions. In addition the ME Grand Superintendent had been please to award a Certificate of Meritorious Service to E Comp Roger Chandler, PPGSN of Windsor Castle Chapter No. 771. for his services to Royal Arch Masonry.

In concluding the Presentation of Awards, the ME Grand Superintendent offered his thanks and Congratulations to all recipients for their contributions to the Order and the Province of Berkshire in particular. Thanks, were also given to those Officers who had served in active Offices for the past two years, throughout the period of Covid restrictions, and in particular the ME Grand Superintendent expressed grateful thanks to the Provincial Organist, E Comp Brian Bicknell, PGStB, who had stepped down from that post for health reasons.

There were no major changes to the Executive line-up with E Comp Jem Whitmore, PGSwdB, continuing as Deputy Grand Superintendent, E Comp Philip S Howells, PAGDC, remaining as Second Principal, and E Comp Colin D Townsend Green, PAGDC, as Third Principal.  E Comp Steve Hieke PAGDC is also continuing as Director of Ceremonies, and  E Comp David Arnold, PGStB as Provincial Grand Scribe E.

The ME Grand Superintendent expressed great pleasure at these continuing appointments and acknowledged the various talents and characteristics that each of his team members brings to the Executive.  

The ME Grand Superintendent addressed the Companions, expressing his great pleasure in being able to welcome the visiting Grand Superintendents and their representatives who attended in great numbers, adding colour, energy, and companionship to the occasion.

He commented on the very close links the Royal Arch in Berkshire enjoys with Berkshire Craft Masons and the Other Orders, thanking the Provincial Grand Master in particular for his active support, currently amply demonstrated by his roles as First Principal in the Chapter of Enlightenment No. 9946, and Second Principal in the Berkshire First Principals Chapter No. 3684 and for the regular meetings held between the joint Executives, and congratulating him on his recent promotion to the SGC Grand Rank of Deputy Grand Sword Bearer. The ME Grand Superintendent took the opportunity to present a donation of £12,500 to the PGM’s Festival 2023 Appeal, on behalf of the Royal Arch Province of Berkshire.

In conclusion The ME Grand Superintendent drew attention to the launch of the new Strategic Roadmap for Freemasonry for both the Craft and Royal Arch Masonry, and the commonalities with his own Royal Arch Prosperity Triangle of Leadership, Performance and Membership.
