Freemasonry in Berkshire is set to make history with the amalgamation of two long-established lodges — Whiteknights Lodge No. 5894 and Prince Arthur of Connaught Lodge No. 5261 — to form a new, united lodge under the name Prince Arthur of Connaught & Whiteknights Lodge. This marks the first amalgamation of lodges within the Province of Berkshire, representing an exciting step forward in preserving Masonic tradition while ensuring a vibrant future for all members.
A Proud Heritage
Both lodges bring with them a distinguished history and deep Masonic roots.
Whiteknights Lodge No. 5894, consecrated in 1943, is a general interest lodge based at Sindlesham, meeting five times a year on the second Thursday of the month from October to March. Whiteknights is a daughter lodge of Vitruvian Lodge No. 87, one of the oldest in the country, consecrated in 1810 during the reign of King George III.
Prince Arthur of Connaught Lodge No. 5261 was consecrated in 1931 and also meets at Sindlesham, traditionally on the first Thursday of the month. It proudly traces its heritage to The Reading Lodge of Union No. 414, founded in 1833.
Strength Through Unity
While both lodges have maintained active memberships, attendance numbers have fluctuated in recent years. The amalgamation offers a way to enhance meeting experiences, increase participation, and provide a fuller and more enjoyable festive board.
Whiteknights currently has 22 members, while Prince Arthur of Connaught has 13. By joining forces, the new lodge will boast a stronger, more diverse membership, creating fresh opportunities for ceremony, fellowship, and learning.
The amalgamation process involves Prince Arthur of Connaught Lodge surrendering its warrant to the United Grand Lodge of England, with all members transferring to the new amalgamated Lodge, Prince Arthur of Connaught Whiteknights Lodge. The amalgamated lodge will carry both names to honour their shared legacy. Both warrants and lodge banners will be proudly displayed at future meetings, preserving the heritage of each lodge.

Shared Vision for the Future
The new lodge will meet at Sindlesham on the second Thursday of the month in October (Installation), November, December, February, and March — aligning with existing Whiteknights meeting dates. A Class of Instruction will be held twice monthly, supporting both newer and experienced members in ritual work and personal development.
The amalgamated lodge will:
- Retain and engage current members.
- Welcome and mentor new members, with several already awaiting initiation.
- Continue strong charitable traditions and widow care programs.
- Create leadership and personal development opportunities.
- Strengthen ties with local Holy Royal Arch Chapters, particularly the Sons of Kendrick Chapter.
The lodge will also be proactive in community outreach and recruitment, with the Membership Officer working closely with the Provincial Membership Team to promote Freemasonry locally and online.
Preserving Traditions, Building the Future
Through this historic amalgamation, the Prince Arthur of Connaught & Whiteknights Lodge aims to preserve the wisdom and heritage of both lodges while ensuring a thriving future for Freemasonry in Berkshire.
