Berkshire Freemasons support adoption charity PACT

by Paul Thomsett

Parents And Children Together (PACT) is an adoption charity and family support provider helping hundreds of families every year through adoption, as well as offering an award-winning post-adoption support programme. It specialises in supporting adopting families who have adopted children with multiple and complex needs.

A grant of £29,786 from the Berkshire Freemasons will allow PACT to support their Specialist Education project, which was developed in response to an increasing number of PACT families desperately seeking advice and support to understand their adopted children’s behaviour, address negative school experiences, and reduce discrimination of adopted children.

The majority of adopted children have been abused and neglected, and experienced trauma and loss. Many of these children exhibit disruptive and disengaging behaviours in school.

The Specialist Education Project responds to growing requests for help from PACT families facing a wide range of education-related challenges for their adopted children. The project makes significant difference to families each year through;

  • advocating for adopted children in order to reduce discrimination when accessing education, reduce exclusions and improve school experiences.
  • facilitating peer support to empower adopting parents.
  • increasing awareness and skills amongst teachers regarding strategies and adjustments needed to ensure adopted children thrive.

This vital support can save an adoption and transform a child’s life. Up to 70 children will benefit over the year.

Kate Ferguson of the Charity said “PACT is delighted to be awarded a grant of £29,786 towards its Specialist Education Project. Adopted children are often disadvantaged after being removed from their birth families after experiencing neglect, abuse and trauma. This can cause difficulties in school if their needs are not fully understood.”

The value of the project is evidenced by one adopting parent’s feedback: “I am so grateful to The Specialist Education Worker for the invaluable advice that she has given us over the last couple of years as my son’s educational needs have become increasingly apparent. The input we have had from both Amy and the Adoption Support team at PACT has been phenomenal and our lives are certainly better for it.”
