A Jewel of Mystery and Memory

by Liam Kenny

Freemasonry is steeped in symbolism, tradition, and history. Every jewel and every piece of regalia tells a story – some well documented, others less so. One such curiosity continues to intrigue Berkshire Freemasons today: a unique 3/4 sized gold Provincial Grand Master’s Jewel.

A few years ago, while attending a Provincial Lodge meeting in the South of England, the Provincial Grand Master of Berkshire was approached by the Grand Secretary of that Province. He had been entrusted with the regalia of a Brother who had sadly passed to the Grand Lodge Above. Amongst the items was the unusual jewel.

Unlike the standard issue Provincial Grand Master’s Jewel, this version is smaller, beautifully crafted in gold, and carries with it an air of mystery. Its exact origins are uncertain, with no surviving records to explain who commissioned it, when it was made, or why it differs in size and composition from the official jewel.

What is certain, however, is that it has become part of Berkshire’s living Masonic heritage. Each year, at the Annual Provincial Grand Lodge Meeting, the Provincial Grand Master chooses to wear this rare piece, reserving the official jewel for all other occasions. In doing so, he ensures that the memory of a departed Brother – and the fascinating history of this jewel – lives on in the Province.

Freemasonry often reminds us that we are custodians of tradition, passing down not only values and principles, but also the symbols and artefacts that embody them. This mysterious jewel serves as a poignant example: a link to the past, a symbol of continuity, and a reminder that even the smallest treasures may hold the greatest stories.
