50 Years in Freemasonry

by Peter Wells

At a meeting of Sindlesham Lodge on Friday 15 September 2023, a 50 years in Freemasonry certificate was awarded to David Chopping.  It was presented by Berkshire’s Assistant Provincial Grand Master, Matthew Walker; and David’s blood brother Keith was there to see it too.

David comes from a long-established masonic family in the Reading area.  He was initiated into Sindlesham Lodge in September 1973 aged 27 years, by his father, who was one of the Founders of that Lodge. He was later Installed as Master of the same Lodge, in April 1984.

David has never extended his masonic activities beyond his Mother Lodge and its associated Royal Arch Chapter; preferring to concentrate his energies on ensuring both of these continue to flourish.  He is thought by his friends in the Lodge to be talented at delivering ritual.

Working as a Chartered Surveyor, somehow, he also managed to fit in that he was for many years a stalwart of the Wokingham Hockey Club.  Playing as a ‘right winger’ with a blistering turn of speed.

David has always enjoyed serving the people of the area where he lives. David also served as a Wokingham Borough Councillor for 16 years, and as an Earley Town Councillor for 32 years, standing down this year. David was the Town’s first mayor in 2005.

He and his wife Margaret enjoy combining holidays with their passion as ‘twitchers’ (bird watchers). Travelling the world to see ever more exotic species.  Since their retirement travelling has become another favourite pastime in both Margaret and David’s lives.
