The streets between Shinfield and High Close School, Wokingham, were alive with festive cheer and the roar of over 1,300 motorbikes on Sunday as the 38th Annual Reading Toy Run unfolded. This cherished event, which collects toys for children at Barnardo’s High Close School, showcased the holiday spirit in full throttle.

Among the many contributors to this year’s success were the Berkshire Freemasons, who played a pivotal role in ensuring the run’s safety and organisation. A dedicated team of Freemason Marshals, decked out in high-visibility vests and smiles, expertly managed traffic along the route, guaranteeing a smooth and enjoyable ride for participants.
Leading the Freemasons’ efforts was WBro Steve Harris, the Chief Marshal and organiser. His meticulous planning and commitment ensured the event ran like clockwork. Supporting him was WBro Marcus Hilsdon, who coordinated efforts within the group, and a stellar team of Marshals including WBro’s Neil Harvey, Ian Hopgood, Kevan Neville, Andy White, Clive Hitchen, Bruce Hartrup, and Russell Tschumi. Their dedication exemplifies the Freemasons’ ethos of service to the community.

This year’s Toy Run was a sight to behold, with riders donning festive outfits, from Santa suits to reindeer antlers, all to deliver toys to children who might otherwise go without during the holiday season. The atmosphere was electric, a heartwarming blend of revving engines, laughter, and goodwill.
Reflecting on the day, WBro Steve Harris expressed gratitude to all who participated, saying, “The Toy Run is more than just a ride; it’s a community coming together to make a difference. Seeing the joy on the children’s faces makes every effort worthwhile.”
The involvement of the Berkshire Freemasons highlights their ongoing commitment to supporting charitable initiatives and fostering a sense of togetherness. Their presence not only ensured safety but also underscored the spirit of giving that lies at the heart of the event.
As the bikes rolled into High Close School, laden with gifts, the gratitude of the Barnardo’s team was palpable. Events like the Reading Toy Run remind us all of the power of collective goodwill and the importance of reaching out to those in need, especially during the festive season.
Congratulations to all who took part, and a special thank you to the Berkshire Freemasons for their invaluable contribution. Here’s to an even bigger and brighter Toy Run next year!
