The Acre Lodge was consecrated on 8th May 1972 and meets at the Windsor Masonic Hall which is in the historic centre of the town next to Windsor Castle. The lodge meets four times a year on the second Monday in March, May, September and December at 6pm.
Acre Lodge was founded to advance the masonic interest of past pupils and others associated with the Royal Free Boys’ School, which had spent its early years from 1726-1862 in what is now the Windsor Masonic Hall, before moving in the mid-19th century to the Bachelors Acre, Windsor, from which the Lodge takes its name.
The Lodge celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2022. Throughout its history, the lodge has maintained a continuous connection with the Royal Free Boys’ school. The school amalgamated with the Princess Margaret Rose School in 1998 as part of the reorganisation of the education system in Windsor. This school was closed in 2000. There are still two Royal Free Schools in Windsor – St Edwards Royal Free Middle School and Queen Anne Royal Free First School and further a Royal Free Trust Fund.
At the lodge’s founding, the headmaster of the Royal Free Boys School, W Bro Geoff Finney was its first WM and the lodge throughout its existence has been affiliated to the Federation of School Lodges. We still have three members who attended the school, one of whom (who will remain nameless for the sake of modesty) who was head boy. The Acre lodge remains one of four Berkshire lodges which are associated with schools. Today however, the majority of our members have no connection with the school.
The number of brethren in Acre lodge has remained remarkably stable for the last 10 years at about 30. The occupations of the members continue to cover most professions and a wide range of careers. Over the years some occupations have repeatedly reoccurred eg education, air traffic control officers, all three military services, the emergency services, the NHS, computers and IT and the law. As with all good lodges, this variety has been a cause of strength rather than weakness.
The members of Acre Lodge look forward with optimism and hope to the next 50 years and would welcome either joining or new members.
