| Reading Lodge of Union’s present Warrant is dated 21st May 1833. However, the Lodge traces its origin to the year 1808, when a warrant was granted to the Lodge of Virtue No. 122 meeting at the Swan Inn, St Mary’s Butts, Reading. In 1863 the Lodge number was altered from “597” to “414”. The Lodge still possesses some of the old firing glasses bearing the original Lodge number 597 which were presented to the Lodge in 1841. Visitors to the Lodge will find these and several other old and curious traditions upheld, particularly at the festive board. The Lodge emblem shown on the Lodge banner first used in 1896 depicts the early Arms of the Borough of Reading which shows a medieval noblewoman believed to be Queen Elfreda with four of her maids, on a field of scarlet, and surrounded by the Square and Compasses. Being the oldest truly Berkshire lodge within the province and had established the home of Freemasonry in Reading when it acquired land at Greyfriars Road to build the Masonic Hall there, the foundation stone of which was laid in March 1859 and the building completed in 1860. As such, a very large number of other lodges owe their existence to the Reading Lodge of Union which is justly proud of its “family” and its long tradition. The Lodge today holds Regular Meetings five times a year on the third Tuesday in January (Installation), February, April, October, and November. All the Regular Meetings will ordinarily start at 5.45pm with dining at 7.30pm, the exceptions being the Installation Meeting in January and any meeting where multiple ceremonies or a Raising is to take place. On these evenings the Lodge will commence at 5pm. On all occasions the aim is to complete by 9pm. We will aim for one ceremony per year (usually the November Meeting) to be undertaken by the Past Masters of the Lodge. The nominated PM to take the Chair for that meeting will select and appoint supporting Past Masters as Officers. |
